Is Paribus a scam or an awesome app to get some cash back from your online shopping? There’s been a lot of talk about this trending app on social media of late, so I wanted to have a good look at it myself to see what deal is and whether it’s worth using or not.

What Is Paribus About?

Paribus has been around since 2014 and is the brainchild of Eric Glyman and Karim Atiyeh, two entrepreneurs from Brooklyn, New York.

“Paribus” is a strange looking word, but it’s actually derived from the Latin phrase of “ceteris paribus”, which translates to “all things being equal”.

We learn something new every day.

So what does this app do exactly?

We’re getting to that shortly, but first, how many times have you bought something from a store, only to discover right after your purchase that same item goes on sale?

I know it’s happened to me many times, so I’m sure you’ve experienced this at least a few times as well.

Okay, so this is where the Paribus app comes in. Many stores have price guarantees and will often give you a recently purchased item (that you bought at full price) for the discounted price. Meaning you get cash back.

 

 

Now what Paribus does is monitor your purchases from various online stores and takes note of the price action. The app actually scans your purchase receipts, monitors the price action, and even goes so far as to put in a claim for a rebate if the app detects a price drop on one of your purchases.

Pretty interesting stuff. I’ve never seen something like this before.

How Does Paribus Really Work?

The very first thing to do is actually sign up with Paribus. Now, you can either do this by downloading the smartphone or tablet app from the App Store, or you can do it all from your computer. It’s your choice.

Basically all you need to do is connect your email address to the Paribus app. It works with most of the major email providers, such as Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo and so on.

Now the second step involves linking a credit card to your Paribus account. There’s no need to be hesitant about this step. They are not going to hack into your credit card.

What Paribus does is takes a 25% fee from every dollar it helps you get back in cash rebates. So if the app managed to recoup $100 for you on your prior purchases, Paribus take $25 of that and you get $75 you wouldn’t have had before.

The fee is directly deducted from your credit card once the refunded amount has been credited back to your card, so you’re never directly out of pocket for the Paribus fees.

The real beauty off all of this is that you don’t actually have to do much of anything to get cash back on discounted purchases. The Paribus software takes care of all the legwork. You just enjoy receiving money paid back to your card.

The app will go through your email inbox and search for previous purchases that are eligible for price adjustments and refunds. The app won’t go out and get a refund for you until you actually approve it. You’ll be informed first in every instance.

This all sounds pretty good and quite easy. I mean, it’s not a career move or something, but definitely a cool way to save some dollars on your shopping.

 

 

You Get Paid Instantly

Other types of cashback and rebate apps make you wait to receive your cash back, but not Paribus. As soon as a refund is finalised, it’s credited to your card and then Paribus takes its cut of the action.

Other apps also have payment thresholds. They make you wait until you’ve earned a certain amount of cash back before they give it to you. The reason they can hang onto your money is because they receive your cash back first and then distribute it to you when they see fit.

Paribus doesn’t work that way. The money goes straight to you. It’s not pooled in some company kitty, collecting interest for them while awaiting distribution of funds.

 

What Stores/Purchases Are Eligible For Cashback?

Not all stores and purchases made will be eligible for a cashback rebate. Of course, the very first thing is the price has to drop after you make a purchase. Then there is the condition that a store must actually be a partner of the Paribus cashback scheme.

• Macy’s
• Sears
• Amazon
• Costco
• Overstock
• And more…

This is all about online shopping, so purchases must have been made from the store’s website rather than at an actual physical store.

Concerns About Email Access

We mentioned earlier that you have to link an email account to Paribus so it can scan your emails. Some people have expressed privacy concerns with this, because the app actually has full access to all your emails and their details.

When you link your email you actually grant the app access to read email, send email, delete email and even manage your email account.

Now I don’t think the app is really going to do much of any of that, as it’s designed to search for online shopping receipts from which to find you discounts and cashback opportunities.

Some people have concerns about both privacy or the app taking over their email account. It sounds kind of scary the way the app words things when it asks for access, but it’s fine. You won’t have any issues.

 

Target Market

This app is perfect for anyone who fairly regularly makes purchases online from the stores linked with Paribus. Even if you just get some cash back every so often, it’s money you wouldn’t have had before.

And it’s not like you have to pay an upfront fee. Paribus only take their 25% cut once they’ve got you money back into your account.

This is not some sort of make money online gig or part-time career move. It’s just cashback, so if you are looking for something more consistent when it comes to making income, then this app won’t be it.

• You’ll get cashback on purchases that get discounted after you bought them
• Paribus has teamed up with some really major and popular retailers
• You even get refunds for shipping delays
• You get paid as soon as the refund is granted. No waiting to reach a payout threshold

 

What I Don’t Like and Red Flags

• 25% is quite a hefty fee to charge
• There are concerns about privacy issues, the app having control of your email, plus the app having access to deducting money directly from your credit card
• The app is only available to people who live in the United States and Puerto Rico
• There are some complaints that the app doesn’t always work properly

 

How Much Does Paribus Cost To Join?

There’s no upfront fee or charge to join Paribus and use the app for getting cash back. The company simply takes a (rather hefty) 25% when, and only when, it has managed to get a refund into your account.

You never pay anything upfront.

 

Is Paribus a Scam or Legit?

Paribus is most definitely not a scam and is actually a pretty cool app; one of the best I’ve seen in this market sector of online shopping cashback apps.

For me the downside is that Paribus isn’t yet available in more countries, but maybe it will be down the track.

You don’t have to wait to receive your cash back like with some other similar apps on the market, and you don’t have to pay anything upfront for the service.

If you love online shopping and you live in the US or Puerto Rico, then this is the app for you.
